Uganda is culturally typical of most East African countries. Ugandans value large families, polygamy is legal and fairly common, and 80% of the country is involved in agriculture.

Curiously, the total fertility rates (the average number of children born to each woman) in neighboring, culturally similar countries like Kenya and Tanzania, have gone down in recent years, to ­­­4.91 and 4.97 respectively, but Uganda’s TFR was 7.1 in 2000, leading to a population growth rate of 3.30% per year.
